Fundraising
Dear Friends and Supporters:
As a current resident or property owner in the wonderful Clayton community, the Clayton Volunteer Fire Department is your first responder in the event of a fire or rescue related 911 emergency. This dedicated organization, which was established on April 23,1887 of volunteer firefighters, has been faithfully serving the town and village of Clayton for the past 135 years. We have been able to serve in such a capacity in large part thanks to the generous support we have received from you in the past. Recognizing the unprecedented challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic we have not solicited donations for the last 3 years and have drawn off our savings and limited fund raising to provide support and needs of the Department's members.
Nevertheless, the men and women of the Fire Department continued to passionately respond to every fire and rescue emergency that we were dispatched to in Clayton and the surrounding communities. Between January 2019 and December 2021, members responded to 660 calls which represented a cumulative 6,107 member responses and 4,422 manhours. These figures don’t include the thousands of additional volunteer hours training, meeting, cleaning, and maintaining our District-supplied equipment and station.
As many of you may know, the “Town of Clayton Fire District” is the government taxing entity that provides and houses all the top-quality fire apparatus and related equipment for our volunteer members to safely use when an emergency arises. Our Department utilizes your financial support to provide members with station and dress uniforms, bereavement and major loss/sunshine committee, installation of officers banquet, historical records retention, Christmas float/party, fire police, fire prevention programs, insurance, meeting refreshments, conventions, repair and maintenance of fire department equipment, community sign, physical training equipment, Clayton Fire Department Scholarship program, social media and website maintenance. The largest expense item is our 50% share of the repairs and maintenance on the Fire Boat, “Last Chance.” In 2021, the 18-year-old navigation and thermal imaging camera were replaced with current state of the art equipment at a cost of over $30,000. Additionally, we installed a digital Community Sign on Graves Street to share community news and events with the public also at a cost of over $30,000.
Chicken Barbecues and our Clam Bakes are great community events; however, they don’t raise the funds required to cover all of our annual expenses listed above.
