As you may be aware, the Clayton Volunteer Fire Department is currently
working through litigation with the builder and design professional of the
new Fire Station on Graves Street, in Clayton. This litigation is as a
result of the failure of the building specifications to meet the New York
State Building Code. How ironic for a fire station not to have a sprinkler
system, fire alarm system, and ventilation system!! Consequently, we have
had limited use of the building for our typically functions—causing our
fundraising capabilities throughout the year to be limited. So, that being
said, our main priority for this year’s annual fundraising drive is to have
these three systems installed in the fire station. This is estimated to cost
in excess of $150,000. Additionally, the ongoing legal fees for the
litigation are approximately $25,000.
Our Junior Fireman Explorer Post continues to see growth in the 2007-2008
year. Former explorers Ben Barton and Kevin Dibble, Jr. both gleaned the
experience of their explorer careers to become active members of the Clayton
Volunteer Fire Department in 2007. If you are aware of any young community
members who may be interested in learning more about firefighting, please
have them contact the Department.
In 2007, our call volume was 187. Including Fire calls, EMS/Rescue calls,
Hazardous Conditions calls (wires down, etc.), Fire Boat calls, Service
Calls (pump details, etc.), Good Intent calls (controlled burns or cancelled
in route), False Alarms, and Citizen’s Complaints.
The Clayton Volunteer Fire Department made several nominations to the
Northern New York Volunteer Fireman’s Association to be considered this year
for Firefighter of the Year. Firefighter Erin Dulmage donated a kidney to
fellow Antwerp firefighter George Turner. Firefighter Raymond Lowe was
indicated as a positive match for a stem cell donation. He donated stem
cells in December 2007 and white blood cells in March 2008. 95% of the
recipients of these donations are U.S. military-related. Additionally, in
July 2007 several CFD members risked immense danger attempting to put out a
boat fire when the Faire Jean caught fire in Canadian waters on Lake Ontario
and to rescue the 38 adults and children in the water.
This year’s Clayton Volunteer Fire Department Booster Club is well under
way. If you would like tickets to the Booster Club, please contact Dale
Kenyon at 315-686-3428.
We are excited to acknowledge that you and the community of Clayton have
made great strides at marking your homes and docks with reflective 911
signs. If you have not yet obtained one of these signs to make your home or
dock more easily detectible to emergency personnel, please contact TIERS at
315-686-2058.
This is our annual fundraising request. Our initiatives for this year, as
previously stated, are to install a Fire Alarm System, a Sprinkler System,
and a Ventilation System in the Fire Station to bring the Station up to code
and allow the Department to conduct its normal activities in the building.
These installations are expected to be completed by July 1, 2008. We hope to
be wrapping up the litigation regarding the building by the same time.
Please complete the enclosed donor card and return it with your tax
deductible gift in the supplied envelope. Also, please include your contact
email address for notification purposes.
As always, we thank you for your support.
